Today we start with a trip to Pushkin. Step back to the days of Russia’s 18th-century Tsars on a tour of the Catherine Palace in Pushkin, formerly called Tsarskoe Selo. Travel from St Petersburg to the blue-and-white baroque palace, sometimes dubbed the Pushkin Palace. Ogle the gold and marble interiors, including Catherine’s Palace and the Amber Room, spectacularly coated in amber and mirrors and admire the lovely gardens. After lunch have a panoramic city tour of St Petersburg. Saint-Petersburg is a mecca for lovers of beauty and is the second largest and most beautiful city in Russia. The imperial city of golden spires, golden domes, pastel palaces and picturesque canals, with its arrow of straight avenues, leafy parks and lovely architecture, St Petersburg is as staggeringly impressive as New York or Paris. During the tour you will see all the main highlights of St. Petersburg: the Winter Palace, Nevsky Prospect, Kazan Cathedral, the Admiralty, Palace Square, the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Naval Museum, St. Petersburg University, the Menshikov Palace, the Fine Arts Academy, the Bronze Horseman, Alexandrinsky Theatre, Smolny Cathedral, the monument to Catherine the Great, Fine Arts Square, the State Russian Museum, the Church of Resurrection on Spilled Blood as well as numerous canals and rivers and beautiful bridges across them. Later, our guide will take you on a journey through time and explain the full story behind the city, the events that have left scars on the Russian faces, its optimistic and dramatic plans for the future, together with anecdotes about its strange, friendly and colourful inhabitants. Our guide will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about this most fascinating of cities. Also included is a visit to Peter and Paul Fortress, and cruise on River Neva.
